Sean Patrick Cox
Sean Patrick Cox has been an elder law attorney for 22 years. He was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1994 and the State Bar of Florida in 1995. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University in 1989 and his law degree from Michigan State University College of Law in 1994. Sean concentrates his practice in estate planning, veteran’s benefits, Medicaid/nursing home planning, probate litigation, probate and estate administration, asset protection/trust planning, special needs trusts and guardian and conservator issues. His main office is in Grand Rapids, Michigan and he has a second office in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Sean lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan along with his wife, Cheryl and their children Keegan and Grace.
Sean is a VA accredited attorney and has helped hundreds of veterans obtain the VA non-service connected Aid and Attendance Pension. This special pension entitles war time veterans and their spouses to receive a tax free monthly benefit to help pay for the cost of in home care, assisted living care or nursing home care. Sean just completed two years of service as commander of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL), Squadron 258 at the Boat in Canoe Club in Grand Rapids. The SAL focuses exclusively on events, fundraisers and other charitable efforts to support our local veterans, the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, and national veterans groups as well.
Sean also helps clients and their spouses protect their assets in the event that they have to be placed in a nursing home for long term care. The law with respect to nursing home/ Medicaid asset protection is constantly changing, however, there are still numerous opportunities to protect assets through the use of asset protection trusts, promissory notes, special needs trusts and other devices, so that clients don’t have to worry about losing their lifelong savings to a nursing home.
Sean is active in the community as a member of Caregiver Resource Network, the Council on Aging, the West Michigan Healthcare Network, the Area Agency on Aging, the Grand Rapids Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee, the downtown Grand Rapids Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, West Michigan Spartans Alumni Club and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Sean and his family attend church at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Grand Rapids.
